Information for Visitors with Limited Mobility
The museum building, gift shop, and restrooms are wheelchair accessible, and an elevator provides service to both floors of the museum. Given the nature of our collection, many of our historic rolling stock exhibits are not fully accessible and cannot be made so, having been designed and manufactured between 1914 and the early 1950s. The path to the 2-foot gauge train ride is graveled and may not work well for scooters, wheelchairs, or other wheeled mobility aids. The museum does have a special wheelchair that may be available at the user’s risk. We are committed to doing the best we can to make your visit enjoyable.

We were pleased to welcome members of the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway Historical Society today. They were in town this weekend for their annual convention and toured the museum, paying special attention to our SP&S collection and our library.

A short Spokane International Railway train in 1953. The locomotive is an ALCO RS1 built in 1953 and newly delivered. The Spokane International was one of the first railroads in the U.S. to completely transition from steam to diesel, retiring its last steam locomotive in 1949. RS1 remained the primary motive power for the SIRR until the Union Pacific took over operations at the end of the decade. And today we celebrated! It has been eight years since we opened to the public, the same day our collection arrived as it was moved from the Spokane County Fairgrounds to our permanent home. We get bigger and better every year and thank you for being on this journey with us!

Union Pacific Fairbanks Morse H-15-44 leads a frei

Union Pacific Fairbanks Morse H-15-44 leads a freight train with a mix of diesel and steam locomotive power in the Union Pacific’s Dishman yards. Fairbanks Morse only built 35 of these locomotives between 1947 and 1950 (having only started building diesel locomotives a few years before), with Union Pacific ordering five of them. While Fairbanks Morse was famous for its diesel engines that were highly regarded for ships and submarines, its attempts in the diesel electric railway locomotive industry met with limited success and sales, ending locomotive production in 1958. This is our August calendar photo.

If by chance you came out to the museum recently and weren’t able to ride our two-foot-gauge mine train, that is because both of our engines were out of service. We are happy to report that #2 has a new engine and is back to work. Come on out and take a ride!

If you have been to the museum and walked past our

If you have been to the museum and walked past our wooden Great Northern caboose, you may have noticed that only one side of it featured the appropriate wooden siding. For many years, the caboose was up against a chain link fence at the Spokane County Fairgrounds, so it was easier to cover that then-south-facing side of the car, which was not visible to the public, with sheet metal. Now, however, this beautiful specimen is getting a long-overdue complete makeover. Come on out and follow our progress!

(Edited) No better way to celebrate National Train

(Edited) No better way to celebrate National Train Day 2024 (marking 155 years of transcontinental railroading) than by announcing that Northern Pacific GP9 #317 is one major step closer to her permanent home at our museum. She will donate useable parts to Western Rail before joining our collection, where she will eventually be prepared for permanent static display. Welcome back to the PNW!
